REVEALS
A tour of Fallout 76 shelters, from naked shell to fully dressed experiences
Fallout 76 shelters are first revealed as empty spaces as offered in the atom shop from time to time. As videos progress, builds show what sorts of ideas can be expressed within them.
I use many little tricks to bring my concepts to life, and in some cases there are sneak peeks into my secret areas. Hopefully they will inspire your creative juices.
NOTE
This is a new page, so its content is currently modest. Over the coming months, more shelters will be added until I reveal all.
Shelters allow you to create your own worlds without the wasteland’s interruptions
WHY SHELTERS?
You can only have 1 CAMP active at a time, but all your shelters for a character are active at once.
That means you can share your ideas, connect themed concepts, or tell stories, all while surprising and delighting visitors.
CONCEPT-DRIVEN
Shelters can be the purest expression of a concept. They are often too bright, and never allow weather systems, but there is a lot you can do to overcome or work around those limitations to create your own vibe.
Build budgets are mostly adequate and spaces can be transformed to be unrecognizable.
FULL CONTROL
Shelters are fully self-contained environments. You can work with the elements and vibe they already have, or completely create your own. You can respect the game’s boundaries, or you can often make your own. It’s up to you.
RADIANT REMEDY SHELTER
OVERVIEW
The Radiant Remedy Shelter in Fallout 76 is constructed over 3 levels. It is subterranean, so it is fitting that the entry is on the upper floor. On that level there are realistically 5 zones you can build in, connected by openings and corridors with a small rectangular pond for no apparent reason but it looks good. Narrow stairs lead down to the middle level, where there are probably 3 zones in which you can build. Finally, another set of stairs takes you to the lowest level where there is a larger pond and another zone to decorate.
UPSIDES
The theme of the Radiant Remedy Shelter is strong but still allows for many different interpretations. The abundance of little building areas allows for rooms without needing to build walls. The ground is dirt so plants can be used too. Build budget is adequate for a solid, well-decorated build. Lighting levels are low so you can control your colour themes nicely.
DOWNSIDES
Floors are often uneven, so items placed on them might not sit flat on the ground, especially near walls. That can be fixed with a little merge but it’s painful. The shapes and dugout vibe are what they are - either they suit your concept or they don’t.
SECRETS
There’s a lot of buildable room outside the shelter walls to do pretty much whatever you want out there. At minimum, it’s the ideal place for the shelter generator because it’s just too big to fit inside without dominating an area.
MY RATING: 7/10 - Worth getting if you like the dirt room vibe.
ROOT CELLAR SHELTER
OVERVIEW
The Root Cellar Shelter in Fallout 76 is one of my favourites, so let’s get that out of the way. The small entry is very simple, with a plain dirt floor. You can even leave it pretty sparse if you want, depending on your concept. A brick-walled subway corridor runs from it to a large empty chamber - and that’s all there is! The wonderful bit is the chamber itself - it has 2 steaming grates, a cobblestone floor, brick and masonry walls, and a solid roof. It looks and feels real, with enough mood, space and build budget to express your design ideas wonderfully well
UPSIDES
The space is perfectly proportioned and, with low lighting and added steam, it can create a naturally moody and misty vibe. All surfaces are excellent, but you can build walls and floors to make whatever divisions or freestanding structures you want. Make whatever you like, modern or old, clean or spooky, just don’t waste what it has to offer by flooding it with bright light. Really, the lighting is there but not intrusive, and you can easily create your own lighting scheme, directly or indirectly (as I tend to do).
DOWNSIDES
Players are only allowed 1 per character, and the dirt-floored entry is a bit uninspired and uninspiring, as if the intern who designed it just gave up. And the dopey clean metal drain strips are an out-of-step eyesore, but you can ignore them mostly.
SECRETS
There’s a lot of buildable space outside some of the official shelter boundaries to create some amazing effects, place generators, or work with ambient lighting. I can’t help using that little trick with every build I do in this one. Some places can be hard to get to but if you use freecam mode and patience you can get to almost anywhere you want.
MY RATING: 9/10 - Don’t think about it, just get it.
